A CLASSIC EXAMPLE
by Rachita Gupta,Campus Reporter.
As a student of literature,I have become habituated to swimming around books from all genres; weather they be Roman or Greek tragedies.modern classics, comedies, contemporary, popular fiction or coffee table books.Enter a library and you'll find yourself in a very different world,a world that can either be fanciful and get you into a dreamlike state or a storehouse of facts and reality;it also depends on what kind of book are you reading. New cafes have been opened up with their inbuilt libraries which offer pleasure and relief from active and crazy that sucks up all energy.
But whatever it may be,the issue i'm concerned it with is that the people are more into reading coffee-table books rather than something intellectually stimulating. Moreover, people are concerned with what is happening in another's Facebook profile rather than reading a good book or using their time fruitfully. Why do we always crave for things which have 'masala' in it? There are better things to do rather than seeing a hero, heroine and a villain(typical Bollywood romances).
Here...I appreciate the talent of Amir Khan who created movies such as 3 idiots and Taare Zameen Par which give old as well as new generations something to think about.
All canonical texts and classics gives us something to think about. Why do you think Shakespeare,up to this date,is considered greatest of all poets and writers? There is not one issue he has not dealt with in his books.Virginia Woolf,a feminist and Mary Wollstonecraft...should they be ignored!!!
The only people left now who appreciate classics are probably the students and professors of literature and may be some others. The complexity however arises, when we think how to get people to appreciate it. There is where the problem lies.Reading coffee table books is not a crime but ignoring writers such as Virginia Woolf,Austen,Eliot certainly is.They make us use our intellect, which is of no use nowadays.
There are two kinds of people in this world : one who do read and engage in other activities of daily life whether it be shopping, drinking, having fun with friends, hang outs; and their are those who just open up their social networking sites, comment on their friend's status while indulging in shopping, eating and merry-making without exercising their minds. It is upto us which one to choose....the former, which can make us to do something in life and make us better individuals or the latter which we do what the world is doing without enhancing our personality and giving a uniques aspect to it.
